Learning Reimagined for a Just World

Our Mission

The Hoboken Charter School is a K-12 community committed to social justice and service-learning grounded in learner-centered practices. We seek personal, civic, academic, and artistic growth for all of our members. Through an individualized and shared journey, students come to know who they are and how they can change the world.

About Hoboken Charter School

Hoboken Charter School is a tight-knit community of students, educators, and families. We believe that students thrive in environments where they are known — not only by their peers but by the entire school community.

Creating a more just world requires a departure from conventional teaching and actively involving our students in their learning journey. Our setting allows for unique, personalized learning experiences where every child’s voice shapes their education.

Our journey began in 1997 with a vision shared by Hoboken parents and educators. Since then, we’ve maintained an ongoing history of strong academic achievement and demand in our community. Every five years, we pass the New Jersey Department of Education’s (NJDOE) rigorous and comprehensive renewal process to maintain our charter status.

Our Approach

HCS has an ongoing history of strong academic achievement and demand in our community. Our learner-centered approach and service-learning support these key areas.

01

Academics

HCS’s rigorous academic program exceeds New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards by blending hands-on, inquiry-based learning with advanced technologies, fostering student-driven exploration. Students work independently and in teams to solve complex problems, encouraging creative thinking and real-world preparedness.

03

Personal Growth

We prioritize our students’ physical, emotional, and psychological development, helping them overcome challenges and achieve personal goals. Students learn to give and receive positive feedback, build relationships, and gain reflective skills for maintaining mental and physical health. They also learn to respect and understand people from diverse backgrounds, fostering compassion and growth.

02

Arts

Students use the arts to understand their lives, relationships, and community, gaining opportunities to make choices and create interpretations. They express themselves through various artistic media, learn from local artists, and experience art in museums, theaters, galleries, and studios, enriching their education and understanding of the world.

04

Civics

Students learn their importance as community members through civic duty, understanding how their actions impact the world. They realize their potential as active citizens, develop a passion for justice and equality, identify community needs, and create and implement plans to address them. They also evaluate their efforts, taking on leadership roles in the process.
